My humble little Alma Mater, Wofford College (enrollment 1440 students) won the Southern Conference Basketball Tournament last night, besting Appalachian State University (enrollment 16, 600 students) to punch their ticket to the big dance for the first time in the school’s history. They have been playing in Division I for only ten years. The pesky Wofford team went 26 and 8 this year with wins over SEC powers Georgia and South Carolina. They played close games but lost to Pitt (final 8 last year) and Michigan State. They won the regular season Championship as well with a conference record of 24 wins and 3 losses. They will be the 14th seed in whatever region they go to, so they’ll be a huge underdog playing somebody like Kansas or Syracuse, but who knows? It’s the Big Dance. Anything can happen. Right? |
